Vice Admiral Robin K Dhowan has been named as the new Navy Chief Admiral of Indian Navy after Admiral D K Joshi's quit over a series of operational incidents. The appointment has been cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Dhowan was the officiating chief of naval staff since February 26, after admiral Joshi's sudden departure following a number of mishaps involving naval warships over the last seven months. He resigned from his post taking 'moral responsibility' for the incidences.
Indian Navy, which is one of the world's largest navies, has appointed Dhowan after running headless for over 50 days. In the last 15 years it was the first time that a naval chief had to leave office in controversial circumstances.
Dhowan will now serve for an additional two years, who would have otherwise retired on May 31.
